The Novena to the Holy Spirit, also known as the Pentecost Novena, is the oldest novena in the Catholic Church and the only one officially prescribed by Church tradition.  It is a nine-day prayer rooted in the biblical account of Acts 1:14–2:4, where the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary prayed in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit between the Ascension and Pentecost.

Traditionally, this novena is prayed during the period between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday.  The prayers focus on invoking the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.  Devotees often recite an Act of Consecration to the Holy Spirit and specific prayers for each day or gift, seeking the Spirit’s light, strength, and love to guide their lives and fulfill their spiritual mission.
