The Patriotic Degree: A Higher Calling of Service
For the man who follows Christ, there comes a time when duty extends beyond his own life and family, and into service to his country and fellow man. This is the heart of the Knights of Columbus, and the Fourth Degree is its ultimate, most visible expression.
The Fourth Principle: Patriotism
On February 22, 1900, our Order added a fourth principle to our pillars of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. That principle is Patriotism. The primary purpose of the Fourth Degree is to foster this spirit of devotion to God and country. Members, known as “Sir Knights,” belong to local groups called Assemblies and are dedicated to promoting responsible citizenship and unwavering loyalty.
The Visible Arm of the Order
Nowhere is this dedication more visible than in our Fourth Degree Color Corps. As the public face of the Order, these Sir Knights serve with distinction as Honor Guards at civic and religious functions. They stand with solemn dignity at wakes for our fallen brothers, march proudly in parades, and add a profound sense of reverence to Mass and other ceremonies. Their presence is a powerful symbol of our commitment to faith and country.
To be called “Sir Knight” is more than a title—it’s an honor. If you are a Third Degree Knight ready to deepen your commitment, we invite you to answer the call. Contact our Assembly to learn how you can take this important step.
